What’s Up With Earl Thomas’s One Eye Black Patch?

So I noticed something watching the run up to the Super Bowl earlier this year. Earl Thomas used to be known for his “over the nose” eye-black patch (that thing football players wear under their eyes to supposedly help reduce sun glare, but I think they wear only to look cool).

But then all of a sudden I noticed that he was wearing an eye-black patch under only his left eye. And I wasn’t the only one to notice this either. I remembered it was mentioned in one of his post-practice interviews (which I have yet to track down), and he didn’t really answer why he had switched. So what do you think? Is there a reason ETIII is wearing only one eye-black patch? My best (wildest) guess – he got a tattoo of XLVIII under one eye and was waiting to get XLIX under the other – oops.
